WONDERS OF THE WORLD

The Collection of Charles Emmanuel I of Savoya

Court life during the Duchy of Charles Emmanuel I (1580-1630) was linked, reflected and completed in that of the community of Turin, which had been bestowed with the functions of a capital city just a few decades previously. The itinerary proposed “Court artists and lay devotion in the capital city” encourages a deeper look at the exhibition, listening to the tales of the city, now as then affected by momentous social and cultural transformations.
The sphere in which court and citizens blended best was the religious one: in the years that the Tridentine principles were implemented, groups of lay people shared a renewed spirituality and devotion animating everyday city life, particularly along the vivacious via Dora Grossa, crossroads of civic, academic and commercial life. Despite the decisive urban redesign carried out by the architects of Charles Emmanuel I, the district of Dora Grossa (now via Garibaldi) was still the city’s busiest street.
The artistic heritage of spirituality and lay devotion is made up of works created especially by architects and artists also working at court and on the Palazzo Ducale building sites. Giovanni Caracca was a member of the Brotherhood of the Most Holy Trinity, the main building of which was designed by the court engineer Ascanio Vitozzi, himself a brother and buried there, replaced by Carlo di Castellamonte. The painter Federico Zuccari was a member of Compagnia di San Paolo (the Apostle is portrayed in the Compagnia chapel, in the Holy Martyrs church), and one of his artworks was also owned by the Brotherhood of Mercy. Guglielmo Caccia (aka Moncalvo) gave his religious art a spirituality that animated his life and his daughters’: one of his pictorial meditations on the Epiphany is still kept in the chapel of the Merchants.
